Ventilation - Why do I need ventilation?

There are two key reasons for ventilating your home effectively: With new technology, homes today are designed to be airtight, waterproof and more energy efficient than ever before. While this results in fewer drafts and lower heating and cooling bills, the Council of Standards Australia state that the airtight design does not allow for proper ventilation of harmful pollutants than can accumulate in a home. These designs also trap moisture inside as effectively as keeping moisture out, thus the combination of these two effects may cause issues over time for both the building and the household members themselves.
Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens are particularly prone to moisture problems caused by high humidity. The condensation and moisture created from steam penetrates crevices and feeds mold, mildew and even in some cases can contribute to structural rot of a building.
Over time, stale air contaminated daily by a collection of pollutants has proven to be harmful for the people and animals living in the home. (Committee ME-062, Ventilation and Air-conditioning, 29 April 2002.)
Opening doors and windows provides some air circulation and ventilation but security considerations mean that we are increasingly less likely to use this option. Proper ventilation, such as an exhaust fan or 3 in 1 bathroom unit can assist in eliminating the threat of poor air quality, and can expel humid air before it has the chance to condense.
